In a mishap that disrupted rail services, five wagons of a petrol-laden goods train derailed near Kumedpur station in West Bengal's Malda district on Friday morning.
The incident, which took place around 10.45 am, caused no injuries but led to a significant blockage on the main line of the Katihar division.
Sabyasachi De, Chief Public Relations Officer of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), confirmed the derailment and stated that a detailed inquiry has been ordered to determine the cause.
Initial reports suggest that the accident might be linked to an "engineering issue" concerning the track, though the exact reason remains unclear.
The goods train, identified as DN IORG/BTPN/LD 70649, was en route from New Jalpaiguri in West Bengal to Katihar in Bihar when the five tankers went off the rails. The derailment completely obstructed rail traffic between New Jalpaiguri and Katihar.
Swift action was taken to restore services, with the Accident Relief Train (ART) dispatched from Katihar. A passenger train, which had been stranded due to the incident, was taken back to Katihar and will resume its journey once the track is cleared.
Katihar Divisional Railway Manager Surendra Kumar assured that while the down line has been cleared, efforts are ongoing to restore full operations on the up line. "Rail traffic will soon be restored on the up line," Kumar said, emphasizing that a high-level inquiry is underway.
