Prime Minister Narendra Modi met affected families and assured them full support.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday announced financial assistance of Rs 1,200 crore for the flood and rain-hit regions of Uttarakhand. PM Modi arrived at Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, where Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami received him.

The PM also declared an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives and Rs 50,000 for the injured in the recent floods and landslides that struck several districts of the hill state this monsoon.

He further announced full support under the PM CARES for Children scheme for those orphaned by the disasters. Modi met affected families, offered condolences, and assured that the Centre will stand by them.

He also interacted with NDRF, SDRF personnel and local volunteers and appreciated their courage and service during the crisis. Modi said the Centre would extend all possible help for restoration and rebuilding of infrastructure.

Chief Minister Dhami later posted on X, “The prime minister's presence in the midst of the affected people at this difficult time of disaster shows his sensitivity towards them.”

This monsoon, heavy rains, landslides, and cloudbursts have wreaked havoc in Uttarakhand, including Dharali-Harsil in Uttarkashi, Tharali in Chamoli, Chenagad in Rudraprayag, Sainji in Pauri, Kapkot in Bageshwar, and parts of Nainital.

According to official data, natural disasters since April have claimed 85 lives, injured 128 people, and left 94 missing in the state.

The PM’s visit to Uttarakhand came after an inter-ministerial team from the Centre recently assessed the damage in the state. Modi reached from his parliamentary constituency Varanasi, where he met Mauritian Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam.

Earlier this week, Modi had visited Himachal Pradesh and Punjab to review the flood situation. In Himachal, he conducted an aerial survey, met Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla, and affected families. He also announced Rs 1,500 crore as immediate relief for the rain-hit state, in addition to Rs 2 lakh ex gratia for the dead and Rs 50,000 for the injured.

Later in Punjab, he reviewed the flood situation in what has been the state’s worst deluge since 1988. Modi announced Rs 1,600 crore assistance, apart from the Rs 12,000 crore already released. The AAP government had demanded a relief package of at least Rs 20,000 crore.

In Punjab too, he announced ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh for families of those who died and Rs 50,000 for the injured. Modi acknowledged the severity of the calamity and assured that both the Centre and state governments would work together to bring relief and rebuild infrastructure.
