Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday virtually unveiled development projects worth over Rs 4,570 crore in Assam’s Kokrajhar district, including railway services and road infrastructure initiatives, after his scheduled visit to the area was cancelled due to heavy rain.
The projects were launched through a video conference from Guwahati, where the Prime Minister addressed the programme after weather conditions forced the cancellation of his Kokrajhar visit.
Among the key announcements was the flagging off of three new trains aimed at boosting connectivity across the region, the Kamakhya–Charlapalli Amrit Bharat Express, Guwahati–New Jalpaiguri Express, and Narangi-Agartala Express.
The Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone for a Periodic Overhauling (POH) Workshop at Bashbari in Kokrajhar district. The facility is expected to strengthen railway maintenance capabilities and improve operational efficiency in the region’s rail network.

As part of the broader development push, Modi virtually participated in the ‘Bhoomi Poojan’ for Assam Mala 3.0, a major road infrastructure programme under which more than 900 kilometres of roads will be constructed.
The initiative aims to enhance inter-state connectivity and strengthen links between national highways and rural roads, thereby improving transportation networks across Assam.
The Prime Minister also took part in the ceremonial launch of infrastructure works for four flyovers and two bridges in areas governed by the Bodoland Territorial Council. The projects, with an estimated investment of around Rs 1,100 crore, are expected to address congestion and improve mobility in the region.
Officials said the infrastructure works are expected to significantly improve connectivity in Kokrajhar and adjoining areas, while facilitating tourism, agricultural access, healthcare connectivity and rural mobility.
The announcements come as political activity intensifies in Assam ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, which are expected to be held in April. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party is seeking a third consecutive term in the state.
