Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday marked a major push to industrial revival in the Northeast by performing the bhoomi pujan for a new brownfield Ammonia-Urea fertiliser project at Namrup in Assam’s Dibrugarh district, describing the moment as the start of a “new chapter” for the region.

The project will come up within the existing premises of the Brahmaputra Valley Fertiliser Corporation Limited (BVFCL) and involves an estimated investment of over Rs 10,600 crore. According to the Prime Minister’s Office, the facility is expected to meet fertiliser requirements of Assam and neighbouring states, reduce import dependence, generate employment, and act as a catalyst for regional economic development.

Addressing a public gathering, Modi said, “Today is a big day for Assam and the entire North-East. The dream that Namrup and Dibrugarh had been waiting for a long time is being fulfilled today. A new chapter of industrial progress is about to begin in this whole area... Before coming to Dibrugarh, a new terminal of the airport was inaugurated in Guwahati. Everyone is saying that Assam has caught on to a new pace of development. What you are experiencing right now is just the beginning...”

Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal said the project would significantly enhance the region’s fertiliser capacity. “Brahmaputra Valley Fertiliser Corporation Limited (BVFCL), the oldest fertiliser unit in Northeast India, has been serving farmers of the region since its inception. To further increase its capacity, a fourth plant is set to be established at the Namrup site,” he said.

Sonowal added that the new plant, supported by the Centre, is expected to be completed within five years and will have an annual production capacity of 12.5 lakh metric tonnes. The expansion, he noted, would transform Namrup into a major production hub, catering to farmers across the Northeast and enabling exports to Bhutan and Myanmar, besides serving markets in West Bengal and Bihar.

Earlier in the day, Modi paid homage to the martyrs of the Assam Movement at the Swahid Smarak Kshetra in Guwahati. He also inaugurated the new terminal building of Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi International Airport and unveiled a statue of Bharat Ratna Gopinath Bardoloi.

The Prime Minister is scheduled to interact with 25 meritorious students under the ‘Pariksha Pe Charcha’ programme during a cruise on the Brahmaputra River later on Sunday.
