Prime Minister Narendra Modi conducted an aerial survey of disaster-stricken areas in Wayanad, Kerala, on Saturday, following devastating landslides that have claimed hundreds of lives.
Flying aboard an Indian Air Force helicopter, PM Modi surveyed the affected hamlets of Chooralmala, Mundakkai, and Punchirimattom, departing from Kannur Airport at around 11:15 am.
He was accompanied by Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, and Union Minister of State for Tourism and Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi.
After the aerial survey, Modi is expected to land at SKMJ Higher Secondary School in Kalpetta and then proceed to visit certain landslide-hit areas by road.
This visit comes in response to the Kerala government's appeal for ₹2,000 crore in assistance for rehabilitation and relief work in the region.
The catastrophic landslides, which occurred on July 30, have resulted in at least 226 fatalities, with many individuals still unaccounted for, marking one of the most severe natural disasters to impact Kerala in recent years.
