Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday condoled the loss of lives in a devastating road accident near Sivaganga in Tamil Nadu. At least 11 persons were killed on Sunday when two state-transport buses collided head-on at Vairavanpatti near Tirupattur, on the Tirupattur-Pillayarpatti route, approximately 15 km away from Karaikudi.
"The loss of lives due to a mishap in Sivaganga, Tamil Nadu is deeply saddening. My thoughts are with those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured recover soon," Modi said in a post on X.
The Prime Minister also announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured individuals would be given ₹50,000, a PMO statement confirmed.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu’s Minister of Cooperation, KR Periyakaruppan, stated on Monday that one of the 11 victims of the road accident, which occurred on November 30, is yet to be identified.
“No one has come forward to claim the body so far despite publicising the photographs,” Periyakaruppan told reporters in Sivaganga. All 11 victims — comprising nine women and two men — were killed instantly at the scene.
Periyakaruppan also confirmed that cheques on behalf of the Chief Minister have so far been distributed to the relatives of eight victims. “The families of the other two victims are here in Sivaganga. The District Collector is with the relatives right now and the formality will be completed soon. Ambulances were also provided to take the bodies,” the Minister added.
