Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday inaugurated the redeveloped Tripureswari temple in Tripura’s Gomati district, offering prayers at the centuries-old shrine regarded as one of the 51 Shakti Peethas.
Governor N Indrasena Reddy, Chief Minister Manik Saha and senior officials joined the ceremony, which drew thousands of people who stood outside in searing heat to catch a glimpse of the Prime Minister.
The temple, built in 1501 by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya, is one of Tripura’s most sacred landmarks and is popularly known as Matabari. Rising on a tortoise-shaped hillock, the shrine holds deep spiritual resonance for devotees across the region.

The redevelopment has been carried out under the Centre’s PRASAD (Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Augmentation Drive) scheme at an estimated cost of ₹52 crore. The project has provided improved facilities, better infrastructure, and enhanced amenities to ensure a more comfortable and inclusive pilgrimage.
The sanctum houses a five-foot idol of Goddess Tripura Sundari and a smaller idol of Goddess Chandi, or Chhoto-Ma, which once accompanied the state’s rulers in battle and on hunts.
Modi, after offering prayers, said the renovation of the temple reflects the government’s continuing commitment to preserve India’s heritage while strengthening spiritual tourism. He added that such projects foster cultural identity while contributing to the region’s development.
