During his trip to Kerala on Wednesday, Prime Minister Modi launched a massive infrastructure package worth more than 10,000 crore rupees, which is intended to modernise the state’s energy, transport, and industrial infrastructure. The initiatives are spread across various major ministries and are intended to strengthen Kerala’s presence in India’s ‘Make in India’ drive.

A major share of investment is being made in the petroleum sector, with the Prime Minister laying the foundation stone for a new ₹5,500 crore Polypropylene unit at BPCL’s Kochi Refinery. Once ready, the refinery is expected to produce 400,000 tonnes of polypropylene every year, which is a critical raw material for a whole array of industries from automobile manufacturing to textiles to medical equipment to packaging. Modi stated that development in this sector is a part of his vision for a self-reliant India.

The visit also brought a major boost to Kerala’s roads and railways. The Prime Minister inaugurated two substantial highway projects on NH-66 — the six-laning of the Thalapady-Chengala section and the Kozhikode Bypass — costing a combined ₹ 4,800 crore. Such facilities are expected to relieve the notorious traffic congestion in Kozhikode and facilitate the movement of freight to Azhikkal Port, which will be beneficial to the state’s farmers and tourism industry alike. On the rail front, three upgraded railway stations – Shoranur Junction, Kuttippuram, and Changanassery – were inaugurated under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, which offer upgraded passenger facilities and accessibility.

In meeting the rising energy requirements of new and emerging technologies like AI and semiconductors, Modi highlighted the need for the development of sustainable energy. To this end, he inaugurated a 50 MW floating solar project in West Kallada, which further cements India’s status as a global leader in the field of renewable energy. He also flagged off a new train and 23 rural roads under the PMGSY Scheme, which highlighted the fact that the record allocation of infrastructure funds in the recent budget is yielding results for the people of Kerala.
