PM Modi mourns Kannada author SL Bhyrappa’s demise

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the author's confrontation with history, philosophy, and social problems is noteworthy and appreciated that his works had made a lasting impression on the country's intellectual and cultural arena.


Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday expressed his condolences on the passing of eminent Kannada author and thinker SL Bhyrappa, who died at the age of 94 at a hospital in Bengaluru.

 

In a post on X, the Prime Minister described Bhyrappa as a "towering stalwart who stirred our conscience and delved deep into the soul of India." 

 

He said that the author's confrontation with history, philosophy, and social problems is noteworthy and appreciated that his works had made a lasting impression on the country's intellectual and cultural arena. A statement issued by the Prime Minister's office further said Bhyrappa's insightful works immensely enriched Kannada literature and instilled in generations a desire to introspect and participate more actively with society.

Bhyrappa was a notable novelist and philosopher. He was also a member of the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT). He received numerous honours, which include the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2015, the Saraswati Samman in 2011, and the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan in 2016 and 2023, respectively.
