Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to Madurai has been pushed back one day to March 1, according to Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party President Nainar Nagenthran, who also teased that new parties are set to join the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) right before the trip.
Speaking to reporters on February 6, Nagenthran announced that the Prime Minister will headline a massive rally at Mandela Nagar, near the Madurai airport, where National Democratic Alliance leaders will share the dais. He added that Modi is also expected to visit the historic Tirupparankundram Murugan temple during his stay.
Nagenthran highlighted local frustration in Madurai regarding the Karthigai Deepam celebrations, noting that residents are upset they still cannot light the beacon atop the Deepathoon despite a court ruling in their favor. This rally follows the launch of the NDA's maiden campaign in Maduranthakam on January 23.
Taking a jibe at actor-politician Vijay, Nagenthran commented on the Madras High Court upholding a ₹1.5 crore fine against the TVK chief by the Income Tax Department. "They started blowing the whistle," Nagenthran said, referencing the TVK election symbol, "We will play the drums now." Vijay has been vocal against both the BJP and the AIADMK, framing the next assembly election as a direct fight between his party and the DMK. To bolster the alliance before the rally, Nagenthran has appointed a two-member committee to hold talks with potential new partners.
