Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit Jharkhand soon to lay the foundation stone for the Birsa Munda Tourist Circuit, a project aimed at commemorating the legacy of the tribal icon.
The project, which has received a budgetary allocation of ₹40 crore from the Central government, is in its final stages of planning, with the Detailed Project Report (DPR) being prepared by the Khunti district administration.
The Prime Minister’s visit is also likely to include the foundation stone laying of eight Unity Malls across different states, including one in the core Capital area of Ranchi.
The DPR for the Unity Mall is currently being prepared, following the completion of the tender process. Officials indicate that both projects may see simultaneous commencement once the DPRs are finalised.
The year 2025 marks the 150th birth anniversary of Lord Birsa Munda, and the Prime Minister may use this occasion to announce a year-long celebration of his legacy.
Although the exact date of Modi's visit has not been disclosed, preparations are underway in the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, with a high-level online meeting recently held between the Central Welfare Department and the Tribal Ministry to discuss the event’s logistics.
SCL Das, Secretary of the Small, Medium and Micro Industries Department, chaired a crucial meeting with top officials from the state to review the progress of the projects.
The Birsa Munda Tourist Circuit will encompass several significant locations tied to the life of Birsa Munda.
These include Ulihatu, his birthplace; Chalkad, where he spent his early years; Birbanki Haat, a site frequented by the young Birsa; Dombariburu, where the British forces infamously opened fire on his followers; the Khunti Sadar police station, where he was imprisoned; and Atkedih, the village of his close associate, Gaya Munda.
These sites, steeped in historical significance, will be developed as part of the tourist circuit in Khunti district, ensuring that Birsa Munda's legacy continues to inspire future generations.
