Top leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will visit Assam in the coming weeks to inaugurate major infrastructure and development projects.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will make a series of visits to Assam in the coming weeks to inaugurate key infrastructure and industrial projects. The high-profile engagements are expected to place the Northeast firmly in the national spotlight through the winter.

According to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the prime minister will travel to Assam in December to inaugurate the new terminal of the Guwahati airport and lay the foundation stone for a 12-lakh-metric-tonne urea and ammonia plant at Namrup. The project was approved by the Union Cabinet earlier this year and incorporated as the Assam Valley Fertilizer and Chemical Company Ltd.

In a post on X, Sarma said, “In the coming days, Assam will welcome a galaxy of national leaders, including Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji & Hon’ble Union Home Minister Shri @AmitShah ji, to inaugurate transformative projects.” These initiatives, he added, would “propel the state’s growth to new heights”, reinforcing Assam’s rising profile in what he described as the “new India”.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s Budget speech had already flagged the Namrup urea plant, with an enhanced annual capacity of 12.7 lakh metric tonnes, as a key addition to the state’s industrial landscape.

Sarma said the prime minister would return in January to dedicate the Guwahati–North Guwahati bridge over the Brahmaputra to the public. Other projects expected to be unveiled during the period include the elevated corridor in Kaziranga, the Silchar–Guwahati expressway, and new academic facilities at IIM-Guwahati.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is slated to visit Assam either in the last week of December or the first week of January. He is expected to inaugurate the Jyoti-Bishnu complex in Guwahati, a 5,000-seat facility, and launch several initiatives at Batadrava, the birthplace of Srimanta Sankardeva. Shah will also address a meeting of BJP booth committee presidents in Guwahati.

Sitharaman will arrive on Friday to interact with nearly 300 young professionals at the semiconductor unit in Jagiroad. She will also inaugurate the Brahmaputra ship terminal and the riverfront development project in Guwahati. On 8 November, the finance minister will lay the foundation stone for the Swahid Kanaklata Barua State University in Gohpur, a Rs 400-crore project cleared by the Assam cabinet in June.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is due in Guwahati on 9 November to attend an Indian Air Force air show marking the IAF’s 93rd anniversary. The event will showcase the force’s full fleet of fighter and transport aircraft.

With consecutive visits by national leaders and a string of project inaugurations spread across November, December, and January, Assam and the wider Northeast are poised to draw sustained political and administrative attention in the months ahead.
