Prime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive in Assam later this week to inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for projects collectively valued at nearly Rs 18,000 crore, with cultural homage and industrial expansion both on the agenda.
The two-day visit on September 13 and 14 begins with Modi attending the birth centenary celebrations of Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika at the Veterinary College Field, Khanapara, Guwahati. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the Prime Minister would land at Guwahati airport at 4.20 pm on Friday before heading to the event.
“At 5.15 pm, he will attend the programme of the birth centenary celebration of Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika. This programme will be 1 hour 15 minutes long, and the main highlight of the programme is that more than 1200 artists will together sing 14 songs of Dr Bhupen Hazarika for 18 minutes. In that programme, we will inaugurate a biography of Dr Bhupen Hazarika, which will be translated into all the languages of India. We will send this biography to 20 lakh families of Assam. The Reserve Bank of India has prepared a coin with the picture of Dr Bhupen Hazarika, and the Prime Minister will launch it,” Sarma told reporters.

The Prime Minister will stay overnight at the State Guest House before embarking on a packed schedule the following day. On September 14, he is expected at Mangaldoi by 11 am to lay the foundation stone of Darrang Medical College, Nursing College and GNM School, at a cost of Rs 567 crore. He will also lay the foundation for a new Rs 1,200 crore bridge over the Brahmaputra connecting Narengi to Kuruwa, as well as the Rs 4,500 crore Guwahati Ring Road.
The itinerary also includes a visit to the Numaligarh Refinery at 2.30 pm where Modi will inaugurate the country’s first bamboo-based bio-refinery built at a cost of Rs 5,000 crore. He will also lay the foundation stone for a polypropylene unit estimated at Rs 7,000 crore, before departing for Kolkata from Jorhat airport.
The state government has already decked Guwahati with banners, posters and hoardings ahead of the Prime Minister’s arrival.
