Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday pays tribute to the Chola heritage at the Gangaikonda Cholapuram Temple on the anniversary of Rajendra Chola I's birth.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the renowned Gangaikonda Cholapuram Temple in Tamil Nadu's Ariyalur district on Sunday to commemorate the Chola dynasty's enduring legacy. The emperor Rajendra Chola I, who is recognised as one of the Chola empire's most tall, significant and visionary leaders and is famous for using naval conquests to expand its power as far as Southeast Asia, was born on the same day as the visit.
A testament to the dynasty's architectural magnificence and military might is the Gangaikonda Cholapuram Temple, an architectural wonder constructed by Rajendra Chola himself in the eleventh century. The temple is devoted to Lord Shiva and is part of UNESCO's "Great Living Chola Temples" group. While touring the magnificent temple complex and praying, Prime Minister Modi reflected on the site's rich cultural and historical significance.
Wearing traditional Tamil attire, such as an angavastram and a white veshti, the Prime Minister actively participated in the religious ceremonies held at the temple. He offered prayers and took part in the temple's ceremonies alongside the devotees gathered for the occasion.
Many people view the prime minister's visit as a component of the Bharatiya Janata Party's continuous cultural outreach in Tamil Nadu, where the party is still growing in support. In his speeches, Prime Minister Modi has made repeated references to the Chola dynasty, specifically Rajendra Chola I. He has praised the emperor's contributions to India's maritime power and cultural heritage.

Rajendra Chola founded Gangaikonda Cholapuram, which translates to "the city of the Chola who conquered the Ganga," following his successful naval expeditions almost a millennium ago. The prime minister's visit coincided with the conclusion of the week-long Aadi Thiruvathirai festival, which started on July 23. The festival's grand finale was held on Sunday amid religious fervour and cultural celebrations.
To welcome the prime minister, scholars and traditional Saivaite hymn singers Shivacharyas and Othuvamurthys sang sacred hymns from Tamil Shaiva texts. A unique musical performance featuring compositions by Tiruvasagam's well-known composer Ilayaraja was also planned to add a unique cultural touch to the festivities.
The temple and its surroundings were decorated with beautiful floral green arches that created a festive atmosphere. Police took total control of the area and stepped up security to ensure the Prime Minister's visit went safely and smoothly.
Notable dignitaries in attendance included Union Minister L Murugan, State Finance Minister Thangam Thenarasu, Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister PK Sekar Babu, Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi, and Transport Minister S S Sivasankar. Their presence emphasised the significance of the event as a combination of religion, politics, and heritage.
