The son of a retired DSP was apprehended for his alleged involvement in the Punjab National Bank loot on Mithapur Road in Jalandhar. Police recovered Rs 3 lakh from the accused. The robbery took place on Monday afternoon.
Commissioner of Police Dhanpreet Kaur shared details during a media briefing. The accused has been identified as Simranjit Singh. Police arrested him along with a weapon and some ammunition. Raids are currently underway to nab the second suspect involved in the crime.
The robbery took place around 2:30 pm in broad daylight, creating panic among bank staff and customers present at the branch.
According to bank employees, around Rs 6 lakh was looted from the cashier at gunpoint. CCTV footage showed two individuals coming on an Activa scooter with their faces covered using handkerchiefs. One of them remained outside while the other entered the bank, grabbed the cash and returned within a minute.
Police said Simranjit lives nearly 2 km away from the bank but chose a longer route in an attempt to mislead investigators. He also changed his clothes after the crime. However, he was identified through CCTV footage. His family members are reportedly shocked by his involvement in the incident.
