Police in Ranchi clashed with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers on Monday who were protesting against derogatory remarks allegedly made about Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his late mother at a Mahagathbandhan event in Bihar last week.
Sanjeev Kumar Besra, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Ranchi, confirmed that there had been an "altercation" between the protesters and police, but stated the situation was now brought control.
The incident has triggered a political controversy after a video circulated online showed an individual hurling abuses at PM Modi and his late mother at the opposition's 'Voter Adhikar Yatra' event in Darbhanga, Bihar. The BJP and other National Democratic Alliance (NDA) leaders have condemned the Congress and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) over the incident.
On Friday, the man seen in the video was arrested, according to the Senior Superintendent of Police in Darbhanga.
The 'Voter Adhikar Yatra', a 16-day rally organised by Rahul Gandhi, came to an end in Patna on September 1. The procession was initiated to raise a hue and cry over so-called "vote theft" by the BJP and anomalies in the voter list by the Election Commission of India (ECI). It started on August 18 with Rahul Gandhi and Tejashwi Yadav, RJD leader, covering 25 districts, including Aurangabad, Gayaji, and Siwan.
The concluding rally in Patna was joined by several prominent leaders from the INDIA bloc, including Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders Yusuf Pathan and Lalitesh Pati Tripathi. Other notable figures who participated at various points in the yatra included Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, CPI(ML) General Secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi, and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin. Several other chief ministers, including Karnataka's Siddharamaiah, Himachal Pradesh's Sukhvinder Sukhu, and Telangana's Revanth Reddy, also took part in the rally.
