Police detained at least 10 members of the Muslim community who protested outside Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray's residence in Bandra on Saturday, opposing the Waqf (Amendment) Bill.
A potential clash was averted when police swiftly detained the protesters, who raised slogans against Thackeray, demanding clarity on his party's stance on the bill. The situation escalated as Shiv Sena (UBT) workers began gathering outside 'Matoshree' in the afternoon, according to a police official.
A leader from Shiv Sena (UBT) alleged that the protesters had been sent by the BJP. The demonstrators, many of whom were residents of the Kurla area, were taken to a police station. They are expected to be released after receiving a notice, with no FIR registered, the official added.
One of the protesters claimed that nine MPs from the Thackeray-led Shiv Sena faction had walked out of the Lok Sabha during the discussion on the bill.
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, introduced in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, was referred to a joint parliamentary committee following a heated debate. The government insisted that the proposed law would not interfere with the functioning of mosques, while the opposition criticised it as anti-Muslim and an attack on the Constitution.
