Suspended TMC MLA Humayun Kabir's son Ghulam Nabi Azad has been detained.

Fresh tension erupted in Murshidabad on Sunday following police action at the residence of suspended Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA from Bharatpur, Humayun Kabir. The presence of police personnel at his Shaktipur residence triggered a stir in political and administrative circles. The police action was reportedly linked to allegations of an assault on a policeman assigned to the MLA’s security. Humayun Kabir’s son, Ghulam Nabi Azad alias Sohel, was later detained in connection with the incident.

According to police sources, the incident stemmed from a written complaint lodged by the security personnel himself. In his complaint, the constable alleged that a verbal altercation broke out during a meeting at Kabir’s office after he requested leave. The complaint further claimed that the MLA slapped him during the argument. When the situation escalated, Kabir’s son allegedly intervened and assaulted the constable.

Following the alleged incident, the constable reportedly went to the police station and filed a formal complaint. Acting on this, personnel from Shaktipur police station visited the MLA’s residence on Sunday morning to question his son. At the time, Kabir was not present at home, as he was in Berhampore. The police subsequently traced his son, detained him, and took him to the police station for questioning.

Police have also collected CCTV footage from both the MLA’s office and residence as part of their investigation. Sources said the footage was seized and stored on two pen drives for examination.

Kabir, however, denied all allegations. He claimed that the security guard had misbehaved with him and attempted to assault him, prompting his son to escort the officer out of the office. The MLA maintained that CCTV footage would support his version of events and said he was prepared to present it if required.

Following the incident, Kabir expressed strong resentment over the police action. He warned that if the police behaved indecently with his family members, Behrampore district headquarters would be shut down and the Murshidabad Superintendent of Police’s office would be gheraoed. Upon learning about his son’s detention, Kabir himself went to the Shaktipur police station.

TMC spokesperson Arup Chakraborty stated that Kabir had admitted to physically assaulting the security personnel. He added that any attack on a police officer must be dealt with strictly in accordance with the law.

Kabir has already parted ways with the TMC and floated a separate political outfit. However, his son, Azad, continues to be associated with the TMC and currently serves as the Chairman of the Public Works Department in the Beldanga-2 Panchayat Samiti.
