Nearly a week after the hospital authorities in Kashmir gave deadline to the owners to identify their lockers, the Jammu Police, along with the hospital administration, on Tuesday stepped up inspections of unidentified and unclaimed lockers belonging to staff and doctors at Shri Maharaja Gulab Singh (SMGS) Hospital as a precautionary security measure.
The move is seen in the backdrop of recovery of an AK 47 rifle from the locker of a doctor arrested in connection with white collar terror module that led to Delhi blast on November 10.
Dr. Dara Singh, Medical Superintendent of SMGS Hospital, said that the exercise to verify lockers was already underway but has now been intensified in the wake of the Delhi blast. “We were already conducting this exercise, but it has been intensified after the Delhi blast. Today as well, we broke open the lock of an almirah in the presence of security officials. We have constituted a four-member committee to supervise and conduct these checks,” he said.
Officials said the inspection drive aims to ensure that no unidentified or suspicious belongings are stored within the hospital premises. Further security measures are expected to continue in the days ahead.
It may be recalled that the Office of the Administrator, Associated Hospitals, Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar, issued a circular directing all faculty members, heads of departments, paramedical staff, and students to identify and label their lockers with their name, designation, and code by November 14, 2025.
According to the circular, issued by the Administrator of Associated Hospitals, the move aimed to remove unidentified lockers occupying space in the hospital and college corridors. The Medical Superintendents of SMHS Hospital, RMOs of respective floors, and the Estates-cum-Transport Officer of GMC Srinagar under the order were tasked with inspecting and sorting out surplus lockers.
“It is impressed upon all the Faculty Members/ Heads of Departments/ Paramedical Staff/ Students, to personally identify their Lockers and Label them… This Exercise should be completed by the 14th of November 2025,” the circular reads.
The circular further warned that no claim will be entertained for lockers not identified within the given deadline. Moreover, Section Officers, Estates Officers, and the Accounts Section were directed not to issue any LPC, NOC, or service book to any employee until their locker has been properly handed over.
