Cybercrime officials in Hyderabad are facing allegations of misconduct after reportedly mistreating a female journalist when she attempted to lodge a complaint on Sunday. The journalist's father had recently undergone a surgery. Taking note of this, cybercriminals exploited this situation by first hacking her WhatsApp account, then contacting her relatives and friends to solicit funds. The journalist's relatives transferred nearly ₹4 lakh via UPI payments.

Upon realising the extent of the fraud, the journalist approached the local cybercrime PS and registered a formal complaint.

When she arrived at the station, police officers allegedly refused to register her complaint, saying that only those who had physically lost money could file the report.

When the journalist challenged this ruling, the officials reportedly spoke to her in a condescending manner, suggesting such cases were common and advising her merely to post a WhatsApp status informing people that her account had been hacked.

As the journalist insisted on filing the official complaint, the officers dismissed her concerns, and suggested her to call the national helpline 1930 instead.

An argument escalated between the journalist and the officers. The journalist's husband, who had went to the police station, started to record the interaction, seeing this a male constable allegedly snatched his phone.

The couple then initiated a protest within the station, which eventually prompted senior officers to intervene and resolve the matter amicably. Subsequently, a formal complaint was registered.
