An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) in Bihar’s Munger district succumbed to injuries after being assaulted by a group of villagers, leading to the arrest of six individuals in connection with the attack.
The deceased officer, identified as ASI Santosh Kumar Singh, was posted at Mufassil police station and was also attached to the emergency response service ‘Dial 112.’ This incident follows a similar case in Araria district, where another ASI lost his life during a scuffle between police personnel and locals.
The fatal attack occurred on Friday evening in Nandlalpur village, under the jurisdiction of Mufassil police station. ASI Singh and other officers had gone to the village around 8:30 pm to investigate a reported scuffle. During the inquiry, a group of intoxicated individuals involved in the altercation attacked him, striking his head with a sharp weapon.
The injured officer was rushed to a nearby government hospital and later transferred to Patna for advanced medical care. However, he succumbed to his injuries early on Saturday.
DGP Vinay Kumar confirmed that a case has been registered and six people have been arrested so far. While escorting one of the accused to identify other suspects, the detainee attempted to escape custody by snatching a police weapon and firing at officers.
In response, security personnel opened fire in self-defense, injuring the accused in the leg. He is currently receiving treatment at a government hospital and is in stable condition.

A manhunt is underway to apprehend other suspects linked to the incident. Addressing the recent surge in attacks on police personnel across Bihar, DGP Kumar stated that all police stations have been instructed to assess risks before conducting operations.
Officers have also been directed to ensure adequate manpower while visiting investigation sites. Law enforcement agencies have intensified efforts to track down fugitives wanted in criminal cases.
Emphasizing the importance of the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) ‘Dial 112,’ Kumar urged the public to respect the system and avoid misusing it. He noted that police teams dispatched under ‘Dial 112’ typically consist of only three to four personnel, making them vulnerable to attacks.
This marks the second fatal attack on an ASI in Bihar within a week. In Araria district’s Lakshmipur area, ASI Rajeev Ranjan, also attached to ‘Dial 112,’ was killed during a confrontation between police personnel and villagers while attempting to arrest a suspect.
The back-to-back incidents have raised serious concerns about the safety of law enforcement officers in the state.
