Tension gripped Bhanganmari village under Khejuri police station in East Midnapore, known to be Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari’s turf, after the bodies of two young adults were recovered on Saturday night, shortly after a local religious ceremony. The deceased were identified as Sudhir Paik and Sujit Das, both are local residents.

The families of the deceased have alleged that Sudhir and Sujit were murdered in a pre-planned manner, pointing to multiple injury marks reportedly found on their bodies. They claim foul play and demand a proper investigation into what they believe is a targeted killing.

The event organisers and the BJP alleged the incident was a fallout of TMC atrocities. This allegation fuelled discontent among locals in a politically sensitive region like East Midnapore.

The incident took a serious political turn after Bharatiya Janata Party’s Nandigram MLA Adhikari visited the spot. He squarely blamed the ruling Trinamool Congress for the deaths, alleging, “This is not just an accident, it is murder. And the murder was committed because they were Hindus. Miscreants backed by TMC are responsible.”

Adhikari demanded that the autopsy be conducted in the presence of a central hospital doctor, and that family members be allowed to remain present during the examination to ensure transparency. He further announced that a protest rally would be held, a bandh will be observed in Khejuri on Monday and he himself will lead a march in the area.

Responding to the allegations, Trinamool district committee member Shyamal Mishra dismissed the claims as politically motivated. He stated, “The deaths occurred due to a tragic accident of electrocution. BJP is exploiting the situation for political mileage, which is both insensitive and condemnable.”

The police sent both bodies for post-mortem examination but have not yet issued an official statement on whether the deaths were due to accident or homicide. The findings of the autopsy are expected to be crucial in determining the next steps in the investigation.

Meanwhile, the atmosphere in the area remains tense, with heavy deployment of police personnel to prevent any possible unrest.
