SIT questions staff

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Chandigarh Police, investigating this high-profile case, has stepped up its probe. So far, more than five of IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar’s staff members have been questioned, sources said. The SIT will soon record statements of Kumar’s wife, IAS officer Amneet P. Kumar, their two daughters, his brother-in-law, Punjab AAP MLA Amit Rattan, and other close family members.

Police sources said it was IPS officer’s daughter who first informed her maternal uncle, MLA Amit Rattan, about the incident. Rattan was reportedly the first to arrive at the scene after hearing the news.

Deceased officer’s phone seized

The SIT has confiscated two mobile phones belonging to IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar and sent them for forensic examination. Investigators had earlier recovered a 9mm pistol and a spent cartridge from the crime scene, both of which are now undergoing ballistic testing.

The officer’s family has not yet handed over his laptop. The same laptop was allegedly used to type the suicide note. This has led Chandigarh Police to approach the court for permission to seize the device.

Each page of the suicide note, bearing Kumar’s signature, is being carefully examined by handwriting experts to verify its authenticity.

‘Wife made multiple calls to officer’s phone’

Police sources said that the Chandigarh Police were first informed about IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar’s death by the Haryana Police. Following the incident, his wife, Amneet P. Kumar, reportedly made several calls to his phone, but none were answered by him or any other family member.

The SIT is now investigating who first informed Amneet about her husband’s death.

Officer spoke to lawyers before suicide

Investigating officers have obtained the deceased officer’s call detail records (CDRs), which show that he spoke to several lawyers a day before committing suicide. The SIT is checking whether these calls were linked to the FIR filed against him in Rohtak, after which his gunman, Sushil, was nabbed by the local police. Sushil Kumar, who is currently in Rohtak jail, has already been questioned by the SIT.

In her complaint to the Sector 11 SHO, Amneet claimed, “Under the well-planned conspiracy, my husband was being implicated in the said case by fabricating the evidence against him, which led him to take this extreme step.” She stated that this was the immediate cause behind his suicide.

Meanwhile, a local court on Thursday postponed the hearing of the UT police’s application seeking permission to seize the laptop used by the IPS officer before his death. The hearing will now be held on Friday, when IAS officer Amneet P Kumar is expected to file her reply.

Police have sought directions for Amneet to hand over the Apple MacBook Pro that her husband allegedly used to type his final note. Investigators said the laptop is a vital piece of evidence and must be sent to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) for verification of the note’s authenticity.
