TMC leaders in Birbhum allegedly return ‘fines’ collected from BJP workers after CM Suvendu Adhikari warned against extortion.

In a development that signals a shifting political climate in the state, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has issued a stern directive against extortion and coercion, warning of strict action against offenders irrespective of political affiliation. Acting on what officials describe as a “free hand” granted to law enforcement, local leaders of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in Birbhum have begun returning money allegedly collected as “fines” from workers of the BJP who were displaced in the 2021 Assembly polls and 2024 general elections.

According to sources, at least 11 BJP workers under the jurisdiction of the Santiniketan Police Station have received refunds of sums that were earlier demanded as a condition for returning to their homes. The amounts reportedly ranged between Rs 50,000 and Rs 1.5 lakh.

The allegations trace back to the aftermath of the 2021 Assembly elections and the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, when several BJP workers in the Kankali area and surrounding regions of the Nanoor constituency were forced to flee their homes. Displacement periods varied from several months to over a year. Victims claim that a payment—allegedly determined based on personal financial capacity—was required to facilitate their return.

One affected worker alleged that his house was demolished shortly after the 2021 election results and that his elder brother was assaulted. He stated that the attacks were targeted at those actively involved in BJP campaigning in the region.

In a more serious claim, a district-level youth leader alleged that he was compelled to sell his house to pay the demanded “fine” for returning home.

The controversy has also drawn attention to local leadership. Allegations have been made against individuals associated with Kajal Sheikh, the TMC MLA from the Hasna constituency in Birbhum. Among those named are Mamun Sheikh, Deputy Chief of a local panchayat, and Alekh Sheikh, a regional leader. Sources indicate that following the change in the state’s political leadership, these local figures took the initiative to return the collected funds.

Political observers interpret the refund process as a direct consequence of the Chief Minister’s uncompromising stance. Adhikari has reiterated that any proven case of extortion or racketeering will invite strict punitive action, with no consideration given to political loyalties.
