President Murmu embarks upon 3-day Sikkim tour

On Wednesday, the President is scheduled to visit Nathu La, the strategically significant mountain pass located along the India-China border.

President Droupadi Murmu arrived in Sikkim on Tuesday for a three-day official visit during which she is scheduled to attend several programmes, including a visit to the strategically important India-China border region, officials said. The President landed at the Libing Helipad at around noon and was warmly received by Om Prakash Mathur and Prem Singh Tamang along with senior government and security officials. Soon after her arrival, Murmu proceeded to Lok Bhavan, where she will stay during the course of her visit to the Himalayan state.


Later in the day, the President is scheduled to flag off the “Pink City Runners” initiative at Ridge Park in Gangtok. The initiative includes specially designated vehicles for women and aims to promote women’s safety and empowerment in public transport services.


Murmu will also visit the renowned Sikkim Himalayan Orchidarium, known for its rich collection of rare Himalayan orchids, and the prestigious Namgyal Institute of Tibetology, one of the country’s most important centres for Tibetan studies and Buddhist research.

On Wednesday, the President is scheduled to visit Nathu La, the strategically significant mountain pass located along the India-China border. During the visit, she is expected to interact with armed forces personnel stationed in the high-altitude region.


Later the same day, Murmu will attend the seventh convocation ceremony of Sikkim University at Manan Bhavan, where she is likely to address graduating students and faculty members. On the final day of her visit, May 28, the President will present the prestigious President of India’s Police Colour to the Sikkim Police in recognition of its service and achievements.


The ceremony will take place at Palzor Stadium, where Murmu will also witness a ceremonial parade and a cultural programme showcasing the traditions and heritage of Sikkim. Officials said the state government and security agencies have made elaborate arrangements for the President’s visit, with heightened security measures in place across Gangtok and other key locations on her itinerary.
