Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir have imposed preventive restrictions in parts of Srinagar city over the anniversary of July 13, 1931.
According to the latest available information, parts of Srinagar falling in the jurisdiction of Nowhatta, MR Gunj, and Khanyar were placed under restrictions on Monday, while the Martyrs’ Graveyard at Naqshband Sahib in Khawaja Bazaar and Nowhatta was also sealed for the day.
The move, according to officials, aims to maintain law and order and prevent any untoward incident during the sensitive period. Security forces, along with contingents of police personnel, were deployed in strength, with barricades and checks in downtown Srinagar areas to regulate movement.
As per top officials, these preventive measures are part of the strategy to maintain law and order and ensure peace in the sensitive areas.
July 13 commemorates the martyrdom of 22 Kashmiris killed in 1931 while protesting against the autocratic Dogra rule outside Srinagar Central Jail.
The day was observed as Martyrs’ Day with official functions, wreath-laying ceremonies, and public processions to the graveyard.
It was a gazetted public holiday before the government of India, through a parliamentary amendment, revoked Article 370 on August 5, 2019, and reorganised J&K into a Union Territory.
