Prof. Simrit Kahlon, a respected academic with nearly three decades of experience, has been appointed as the new Chief Vigilance Officer (CVO) of Panjab University, Chandigarh.
She brings with her a strong background in teaching, research, and university administration, along with a well-earned reputation for integrity and leadership.
Currently, she is a Professor at the Centre of Advanced Study in Geography. Over the years, she has served Panjab University in several key roles, Dean Student Welfare (Women), Coordinator of PU Institute of Social Science Education and Research (PU-ISSER), Chairperson of the Geography Department, and Warden of Girls Hostel No. 7. In each position, she is known to have introduced best practices and promoted high academic standards.
Prof. Kahlon holds M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. degrees in Geography from Panjab University. Her research focuses on urban housing, cultural geography, mountain environments, and the relationship between humans and land. She has published over 30 research papers in reputed journals and completed six research projects, including an ICSSR-funded study on the Lahaul Valley in Himachal Pradesh.
Her interest in national issues is reflected in her writing. She has written extensively on national security and the geopolitics of Jammu & Kashmir. With over 160 articles on Defenceinfo.com, she has also contributed to Indian Defence Review, News Bharati, News Intervention, and The Organiser. She has even travelled to conflict areas in Kashmir to report firsthand, and her work has been appreciated by Lt. Gen. K.T. Parnaik, former Army Commander of the Northern Command.
Prof. Kahlon was also part of a team that drafted the “Action Plan for Making Chandigarh a Safe and Violence-Free City for Women and Girls,” launched by former Punjab Governor and UT Administrator V.P. Singh Badnore.
Her appointment is seen as a move to further strengthen transparency and ethical governance at Panjab University.
