A professor at PES University was suspended on Friday after a video surfaced online allegedly showing him calling a Muslim student a terrorist. The incident has triggered widespread outrage and prompted both institutional and legal action.
According to an official communication issued by the university, the professor—identified as Muralidhar Deshpande—has been placed under suspension with immediate effect pending a detailed inquiry. “A complaint has been received. Pending detailed enquiry into the matter, you are kept under suspension with immediate effect,” the letter stated.
The incident reportedly took place on March 24 but came to public attention on Friday after a video clip of the exchange went viral on social media. In the video, the professor is allegedly heard making offensive remarks toward a student from the Muslim community, sparking criticism from various quarters.
A complaint has also been lodged with the police by the National Students Union of India (NSUI), the student wing of the Congress. In its complaint to Bengaluru Police, the NSUI alleged that the professor had humiliated a minority student by associating them with a terrorist group.
“This act is highly condemnable and unacceptable. NSUI demands immediate suspension of Muralidhar Deshpande and a public apology for his misconduct,” the complaint stated, urging authorities to take strict action.
Reports further claim that the professor made additional remarks during the interaction, including statements referencing international conflicts and threatening language, which have further intensified the controversy.
The incident has also drawn comparisons to a similar case in 2022 at the Manipal Institute of Technology, where a professor allegedly made an inappropriate remark comparing a Muslim student to convicted terrorist Ajmal Kasab. That incident had also sparked public backlash and disciplinary action.
Authorities have stated that a thorough inquiry is underway in the current case, and further action will be determined based on the findings.
