People take part in a protest march against the alleged sexual assault and murder of a trainee doctor, in Kolkata, on Saturday, August 31, 2024.

Thousands are expected to flood the streets across West Bengal on Sunday in fresh waves of protests demanding justice for the young doctor allegedly raped and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital a month ago.

Among the demonstrations planned is another ‘Reclaim the Night’ protest, drawing people from various walks of life, including musicians, artistes, painters, and actors.

The protest will commence at 11 pm in an attempt “to awaken the ruler,” according to social activist Rimjhim Sinha.

The body of the postgraduate trainee doctor was discovered at the state-run hospital in north Kolkata on the morning of August 9.

The incident has since then sparked widespread outrage, leading to continuous calls for justice across the nation.

As part of the demonstrations, participants are set to gather at key intersections across the city.

Several protests are planned from Gol Park to Garia along SC Mallick Road in south Kolkata, while another significant march will take place from Sodepur to Shyambazar along BT Road in the north, organisers said.

Similar demonstrations will also be staged in Barrackpore, Barasat, Budgebudge, Belgharia, Agarpara, Dumdum, and Baguiati.

Earlier ‘Reclaim the Night’ demonstrations were held on August 14 and September 4.

In addition, alumni from 44 schools will march from Gariahat to Rasbehari Avenue in south Kolkata in the afternoon, expressing solidarity and seeking justice for the doctor.

Many similar demonstrations by different social groups have also been planned in various parts of the state during the day.

The Kolkata Police have arrested a civic volunteer in connection with the case, who is now under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) following an order from the Calcutta High Court.
