National Conference president Dr Farooq Abdullah on Thursday appealed to the government to reconsider its decision to detain Doda MLA Mehraj Malik under the Public Safety Act (PSA).
Farooq also urged Malik to withdraw his remarks against the Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Doda. He described Malik’s behaviour with the Deputy Commissioner of Doda as regrettable and avoidable.
“It is unfortunate that the MLA’s behaviour with the DC was not to the mark. The situation would not have reached this critical point had he apologised at the right time,” he said.
At the same time, the NC president maintained that invoking the PSA against an elected representative was not justified. He added “Equally, it was wrong to detain him under the Public Safety Act. Doda is already grappling with floods, and now this episode has further engulfed the district.”
He said the Jammu and Kashmir government to review its decision and release the MLA, while asking MLA Malik to take back his regretful statement against the Doda DC in the larger interest of his people.
“Today, Doda is in trouble. On one hand, it is grappling with floods, and on the other, with the fallout of this incident. I would like to ask the government to think about this seriously and remove the PSA,” he said.
