The Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) on Wednesday announced scheduled power shutdowns in several major cities across the state. The outages are part of a large-scale effort to modernise Punjab’s electricity distribution network.

The department has appealed to residents to plan their daily routines and essential work according to the announced shutdown schedule.

PSPCL has started a focused campaign to upgrade ageing infrastructure. This includes replacing old wiring, maintaining transformers, and strengthening the overall power system.

An official spokesperson said the steps are being taken in advance to ensure a smooth and reliable power supply during the upcoming peak summer season.
Power Minister Sanjeev Arora said the planned outages are necessary for system upgrades that will improve power supply. He added that the inconvenience caused is regretted, but these improvements will greatly benefit consumers in the long run.

The scheduled shutdowns come as temperatures across Punjab are touching 38 to 40 degrees Celsius, increasing electricity demand.

Maintenance work will affect residential, commercial, and industrial areas in cities such as Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar, Khanna, Bathinda, and Mohali.

A PSPCL spokesperson said the modernisation project includes shifting overhead cables, upgrading transformer capacity, and introducing smarter power distribution technology.

The spokesperson added that although the temporary disruption may cause inconvenience, the upgrades are important to prevent breakdowns during high-demand summer months. The department is also working to make urban power lines safer and visually cleaner. Industrial units, especially in Ludhiana and Jalandhar, have been advised to adjust work shifts to reduce production losses during the maintenance period.
