Electricity supply is likely to be disrupted in the state with the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) workers deciding to proceed on three-day mass leave from Monday. Over 10 unions have decided to observe the strike in protest against the non-fulfilment of assurances by the management.
Threatening to bring power department operations to a halt against “anti-worker and anti-pensioner” policies, the employees claimed that there was widespread resentment among PSPCL and PSTCL cadres.
“Mishandling of our legitimate issues by the management and the Punjab government regarding staff shortage and salaries has left us with no option but to go on strike,” the unions said.
The PSEB Engineers’ Association has also extended support to the employees over their genuine demands relating to salary, old pension scheme and recruitment of regular staff. “We have requested the CM to resolve these issues at the earliest. The safety of power infrastructure is our top priority, but the genuine demands of the employees deserve a timely resolution,” said Ajay Pal Singh Atwal, general secretary, PSEB Engineers’ Association.
In a letter issued to its members with copies to the CM, power minister and PSPCL management, the unions said their members had been performing “critical duties to prevent any inconvenience to the public”, and the management should therefore ensure their welfare and safety.
The PSPCL management has asked its employees not to disrupt services, failing which strict action would be taken against them.
