In a significant development, the Punjab government has once again reshuffled the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the assault case of Colonel Pushpinder Singh Bath. This marks the fourth change in the team leading the investigation.
As per the latest orders, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) AS Rai has been appointed as the new head of the SIT, replacing ADGP SPS Parmar. Parmar was reassigned as the Chief Director of the Vigilance Bureau on Thursday.
Despite the leadership change, two key SIT members—Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sandeep Malik and Superintendent of Police (SP) Manpreet Singh—will continue to be part of the investigation team.
This repeated restructuring of the SIT follows previous instances where three different teams were formed but subsequently replaced.
The changes were largely driven by interventions from the Punjab and Haryana High Court or opposition from the victim’s family, who raised concerns about the fairness of the probe.
The case involves the alleged assault of Colonel Pushpinder Singh Bath and his son by Punjab Police personnel. So far, twelve police officers have been booked in connection with the incident.
The frequent changes in the probe team have sparked debate over the handling of the case, with questions being raised about transparency and accountability in the investigation.
