After a heated two-hour debate in the Punjab Assembly over the Seechewal issue, the House adopted a resolution on Thursday censuring Leader of Opposition and Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa for his remarks against environmentalist and Rajya Sabha MP Balbir Singh Seechewal.
The resolution gained support from SAD MLA Manpreet Ayali and suspended Congress MLA Sandeep Jakhar, further escalating tensions within the Assembly.
Earlier in the session, Congress MLAs staged a walkout during the Zero Hour while raising slogans against the AAP Government. They protested against not being allowed to bring a resolution recommending the Bharat Ratna for Shaheed Bhagat Singh.
The situation in the House quickly turned chaotic when Bajwa attempted to speak on Bhagat Singh, prompting sharp reactions from the Treasury Benches. Led by Education Minister Harjot Bains and MLA Inderjit Kaur Mann, the ruling members attacked Bajwa over his comments about Seechewal during Wednesday’s Vidhan Sabha proceedings.
Bajwa countered the attack, alleging that the Treasury Benches had orchestrated a deliberate move to suppress his voice. The exchange led to intense verbal clashes between Congress MLAs and Treasury members, with both sides hurling accusations.

Education Minister Bains stated that Bajwa’s remarks had deeply hurt the sentiments of Punjabis. In response, MLA Inderjit Kaur called for Bajwa’s expulsion from the House, while Minister Aman Arora also strongly criticised Bajwa for his comments about Seechewal.
As the situation escalated, the House was adjourned for 15 minutes. When the session resumed, Congress MLAs staged another walkout in protest after again being targeted over Bajwa’s remarks. Notably, Bajwa himself was not present in the House at the time.
The session was adjourned for another 15 minutes as heated arguments continued between the Treasury Benches and the Congress members.
The Congress legislators alleged that the ruling party was deliberately using the Seechewal controversy to divert attention from the Budget 2025-26 discussions and to avoid passing a resolution seeking the Bharat Ratna for Bhagat Singh.
