The Punjab Vidhan Sabha on Monday passed a resolution condemning repeated examination paper leaks, recruitment-related irregularities and institutional lapses. The House said such incidents have damaged the credibility of public examinations and affected the future of students and job aspirants.

Speaking during the discussion, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann claimed that 93 paper leak cases had been reported across the country since 2014, when the BJP-led government came to power at the Centre. He said 65 of these incidents occurred between 2019 and 2024 and alleged that the Centre had failed to effectively tackle the problem.

The Assembly also criticised the alleged use of excessive force against students and citizens participating in peaceful protests. It referred to cases involving arrests, detentions and legal action against demonstrators, including education and environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk.

Members of the House expressed support for students across the country and urged authorities to withdraw cases registered against peaceful protesters.

The Monsoon Session of the 16th Punjab Vidhan Sabha began on Monday amid protests by the Congress over the alleged pharmacist recruitment examination paper leak in Faridkot.

Before the session began, Congress MLAs led by Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa staged a protest outside the Assembly. They later entered the House wearing black stoles as a mark of protest.

The proceedings, chaired by Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhawan, commenced with obituary references before taking up legislative business.
