The Punjab Assembly on Thursday passed a resolution to refer the conduct of Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira to the House’s Special Privileges Committee for examination.
Treasury benches, headed by Finance Minister Harpal Cheema, moved the resolution during the proceedings. The proposal was supported by MLA Sukhwinder Sukhi.
Congress MLAs strongly objected to the move and accused Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan of playing a partisan role while conducting the proceedings. As the treasury benches continued to raise the issue of Khaira’s conduct, Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa and other opposition members demanded a response from the Speaker on a condemnation notice they had moved against Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.
The opposition had submitted the notice over Mann’s alleged remarks about women in Sangrur. Despite objections from the opposition benches, the Assembly passed the resolution and referred the matter of Khaira’s conduct to the Special Privileges Committee for further scrutiny.
LoP Partap Singh Bajwa and other opposition members again urged the Speaker to respond to the condemnation notice moved against the Chief Minister.
Congress MLAs reiterated their protest against the resolution and maintained that the Speaker had not acted in a neutral manner during the debate.
