The Punjab government has taken a major step to tackle organised crime and gangster networks by introducing an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based policing system in partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar.

The initiative aims to strengthen ongoing campaigns such as “Gangster Te War” and “War Against Narcotics” by using technology-driven policing and intelligence-based monitoring.

Under the collaboration, Punjab Police will deploy advanced AI tools to map criminal networks and identify key operatives more effectively. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between IIT Ropar and Dr B.R. Ambedkar State Institute of Medical Sciences, Mohali, for implementing the project.

As part of the plan, a Data Intelligence and Technical Support Unit will be established at AIIMS Mohali. The unit will coordinate between technical experts and law enforcement agencies involved in the project.

IIT Ropar will develop specialised software equipped with features such as data analytics, voice recognition and dashboard-based monitoring systems. The technology is expected to enable real-time tracking and intelligence-led policing, including action against gangster networks operating from abroad.

The project will also help Punjab Police build a comprehensive and integrated criminal database. Both structured and unstructured records, including scanned documents and handwritten files, will be digitised and brought onto a single platform for quick access and analysis.

Explaining the initiative, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said the aim is to stay ahead of criminals by converting scattered information into structured data and integrating it for faster investigation and improved efficiency.

A senior Punjab Police official said the collaboration with IIT Ropar would strengthen the force’s AI and machine learning capabilities and help identify criminal patterns and networks more accurately.

Officials added that the technology-driven system would assist in dismantling organised crime networks and preventing offences through predictive analysis and data-based decision-making. The project is expected to give a new direction to crime control in Punjab by enabling quicker action, smarter policing and improved public safety.
