A delegation headed by senior Punjab BJP leader Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi and raised several concerns related to the border districts of Punjab.

In a memorandum submitted during the meeting on Monday, which was also attended by BJP national president Nitin Nabin, Sodhi highlighted Punjab’s strategic importance. He said Punjab is not just a border state but stands at the frontline of India’s national security while also playing a vital role in ensuring the country’s food security.

The delegation also raised the issue of farmers cultivating agricultural land located beyond the security fence near the international border.

Sodhi said thousands of farmers have been cultivating these lands for decades but continue to be denied ownership rights, leaving them in uncertainty. He said granting ownership is not only an administrative decision but also a matter of dignity and justice for the farming community.

The memorandum also demanded the four-laning of the Ferozepur–Fazilka road and its declaration as a national highway. Sodhi said the road stretch holds significance for both civilian movement and defence preparedness, adding that upgrading the road would improve connectivity and strengthen logistical readiness in border areas.

The Punjab BJP leader also sought reopening of the Hussainiwala check post, stating that, subject to national security considerations, its reopening could revive trade, boost economic activity and generate employment opportunities for local residents.

Referring to frequent damage caused due to floods in border districts, Sodhi urged investment in strong flood protection infrastructure, including construction of bundhs, to protect lives, farmland and livelihoods.

He further stressed the need for employment generation and suggested bringing central public sector undertakings as well as private investments to the region. He said such steps could help create jobs, reduce drug abuse and curb illegal activities.

Sodhi also proposed running a Vande Bharat Express connecting Fazilka to Shri Muktsar Sahib via Bathinda and further to New Delhi, stating that improved rail connectivity would promote economic growth and ease travel for people of the region.
