Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has scored a big victory in three out of the four assembly constituencies in Punjab where by-polls were held on November 20.
With the vote count nearly complete, AAP is already preparing for celebrations. The party has won in three of Congress’ strongholds—Dera Baba Nanak, Gidderbaha, and Chabbewal. However, AAP lost in its own stronghold of Barnala, where Congress is gaining support.
In Chabbewal, Dr. Ishank Chabbewal, the 30-year-old son of Hoshiarpur MP Dr. Raj Kumar, won by a huge margin. Contesting on an AAP ticket, he secured 28,582 votes, defeating his rivals in a tough race.
In Gidderbaha, AAP’s Hardeep Singh Dimpy Dhillon triumphed over Congress candidate Amarita Warring, wife of Punjab Congress leader Raja Warring.
The BJP, however, was far behind in all four constituencies. For the first time since the 2020 farm laws protests, the party did not face significant competition, ending up in third place in all constituencies.
The results of these bypolls will be a key test for Punjab’s political leaders and could shape the future of the state’s politics.
The by-polls were held in Gidderbaha, Dera Baba Nanak, Chabbewal (SC), and Barnala after the elected representatives from these areas were elected to the Lok Sabha earlier this year.
