Punjab and Chandigarh are reeling under a severe heatwave as temperatures crossed 40°C in at least 10 districts, with Faridkot recording a season-high of 45.2°C.
Overall temperatures across Punjab are running nearly 4.9°C above normal. The Meteorological Centre in Chandigarh has issued a yellow alert for Sunday, warning that intense heat conditions are likely to continue.
The weather department has also issued a yellow alert from April 27 to April 30, cautioning residents about heatwave conditions, warm nights, thunderstorms and strong winds. Chandigarh, meanwhile, remains under an orange alert for the next two days, with wind speeds likely to reach 40–50 kmph.
Authorities have urged people to avoid stepping out between 12 noon and 4 pm and to take precautions to stay hydrated and protect their health. Dry weather conditions are likely to prevail across the state.
Heatwave alerts have been issued for 12 districts, including Moga, Ferozepur, Fazilka, Barnala, Muktsar, Bathinda, Mansa, Sangrur, Patiala, Tarn Taran and Amritsar. Seven districts have also been placed under alert for unusually warm night temperatures.
Temperature readings from major locations recorded 41.0°C in Chandigarh, 42.2°C in Ludhiana, 42.5°C in Patiala and 44.2°C at Bathinda Airport. The heatwave is expected to persist over the next few days, keeping authorities on alert.
