Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday offered his solidarity to Shubhakaran Singh's family, following his death in the ongoing farmers' protest.
CM Mann pledged Rs 1 crore in financial aid and promised to take the necessary legal action against the perpetrators. Mann has also announced a government position for his younger sister.
"The Punjab government would provide financial support of Rs 1 crore to the family of Shubhakaran Singh, who was killed during the farmers' protest at the Khanauri border," he said.
Farmer leaders demanded financial compensation for Singh's relatives and a government position for one of his family members, as well as the filing of a case against those guilty of his murder.
They also sought ''martyr'' status for Singh, who was from Ballo village in Bathinda.
The post-mortem of Singh, whose body was placed in a morgue at Rajindra Hospital in Patiala, was postponed as farmers lobbied for the fulfillment of their demands.
Mann announced that "his younger sister will be given a government job and assured that proper legal proceedings will be taken against the perpetrators..." he said in a post on 'X'.
Rakesh Tikait, chairman of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU), said on Thursday that protesting farmers led by the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) will mark a 'Black Friday' on Friday in response to the death of a farmer at the Khanauri Border.
In the meantime, Haryana Police in Ambala District said that "any losses to the government or private property incurred during the farmers' protest will be repaid by attaching the assets and seizing the demonstrators' bank accounts."
Union Minister Arjun Munda stated that the Central Government is committed to the welfare of farmers and is working to settle the matter through discussion.
He said that the Agriculture Ministry is looking into the issues raised by farmers' groups. The current farmer unrest has spurred the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) to advocate for an inclusive discussion among agricultural stakeholders.
Since the protest began, farmers have been camped out at the Shambhu border near Ambala. Several farmers and police officers were hurt during the fights, which began on February 13.
