Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has called a crucial meeting with senior officials from the Local Government and Rural Development departments, along with the Chief Secretary, State Election Commissioner, and Advocate General, on Friday afternoon.

This has sparked speculation that the AAP government may soon announce elections for urban and rural civic bodies, including Panchayats, Panchayat Samitis, and Zila Parishads.

The elections to 13,241 Panchayats are due following their dissolution and the appointment of administrators.

Additionally, elections for five Municipal Corporations in Amritsar, Jalandhar, Phagwara, Ludhiana, and Patiala are pending. The terms of other rural civic bodies are set to expire in November.

Just two days ago, CM Mann indicated his desire to advance his development agenda before seeking the people's mandate in the upcoming rural and urban civic polls, as well as the four assembly by-elections in Dera Baba Nanak, Chabbewal, Barnala, and Gidderbaha.

He also hinted that civic polls might follow the assembly by-elections, expected to coincide with the Haryana Assembly elections.
