The ongoing discontent in the Punjab Congress is likely to persist until Rahul Gandhi returns to India from his foreign tour, party sources claimed on Thursday.
Both rival camps — led by Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring and former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi — are awaiting Rahul Gandhi's return to clear the air and sort out their differences.
Speaking at a dinner party hosted by former Cabinet Minister Balbir Singh Sidhu at Sector 78 in Mohali, Raja Warring too hinted that the deadlock could end in the coming days.
He said, "People in the state will witness a new political atmosphere. If any party leader or worker is upset with me, I am ready to resolve all issues, but the party must remain united for the upcoming Assembly polls.”
Earlier on Wednesday, AICC general secretary in charge of Punjab Bhupesh Baghel had said it would take around five days to resolve all pending issues within the Punjab Congress.
Despite the differences, Channi said his allegiance to Rahul Gandhi and the party remains intact. The continuing tensions between the two camps have also put Baghel in an uncomfortable position in the state.
While both sides are waiting for Rahul Gandhi to return, the AICC Punjab in-charge is trying to maintain unity in the party.
Among those who attended the dinner were former Punjab Assembly Speaker and former Cabinet Minister Rana K.P. Singh, Fatehgarh Sahib MP Dr Amar Singh, former Nabha MLA Sadhu Singh Dharamsot, Mahinder Singh Rinwa, former MLA Hans Raj Josan, former Zira MLA Kulbir Singh Zira, Phillaur MLA Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary, and Captain Sandeep Sandhu, General Secretary of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC), among others.
It will be interesting to see how Rahul Gandhi will finally sort out the differences between the two camps and restore order in the party.
