In a grave escalation of violence, a sub-inspector with the Punjab Police was shot dead while attempting to quell a fight between two groups in Tarn Taran district on Wednesday night.
The incident occurred in Kot Mohammad Khan village under the jurisdiction of Goindwal Sahib police station.
Sub-Inspector Charanjit Singh, who was part of a police team responding to reports of a group clash, succumbed to bullet injuries sustained during the operation.
Head Constable Harvinder Singh was also injured, having been struck by a brick during the fracas.
Tarn Taran SSP Abhimanyu Rana confirmed the details, stating, "Last night, we received information about a fight between two groups in Kot Mohammad Khan. While trying to stop the fight between the two groups, the police party was also attacked. One of our head constables got injured, and Sub-inspector Charanjit Singh was shot dead. More than 20 people were accused of the crime. Strictest action is being taken..."
Following the assault on the police team, an FIR was lodged at Goindwal Sahib police station. Authorities have detained over 20 suspects in connection with the incident, and a full-scale investigation has been initiated to identify all those involved.
The death of the officer has triggered widespread concern among law enforcement agencies, with officials reiterating their commitment to ensuring justice for the slain officer. The SSP noted that further details will emerge as the investigation progresses.
This incident follows a recent crackdown in Tarn Taran by the Border Security Force (BSF), which, in coordination with the Punjab Police, apprehended a suspected narco-smuggler and seized heroin during a joint ambush.
According to an official BSF statement, the operation was carried out on 2 April, based on intelligence developed by the BSF’s intelligence wing.
