Punjab Police conducted a major operation on Monday, intensifying checks at all vehicle entry and exit points in the state to curb drug trafficking and liquor smuggling.
This special operation, carried out in anticipation of the upcoming assembly elections in Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir, also aimed to monitor the movement of anti-social elements.
Under the directives of Director General of Police (DGP) Punjab Gaurav Yadav, the operation ran from 6 am to 2 pm, involving over 1,000 police personnel.
Special DGP Arpit Shukla reported that the operation was meticulously coordinated across 92 entry and exit points in ten border districts.
These districts, which include Pathankot, Sri Muktsar Sahib, Fazilka, Ropar, SAS Nagar, Patiala, Sangrur, Mansa, Hoshiarpur, and Bathinda, share boundaries with four states and the Union Territory of Chandigarh.
“Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) of the border districts were instructed to ensure effective checking,” said Shukla. During the operation, officers conducted thorough searches of vehicles and individuals, using the VAHAN mobile app to verify vehicle registrations.
The police checked 4,245 vehicles, issuing challans to 293 and impounding 16.
They also registered 26 first information reports (FIRs), arrested 27 individuals, and detained 401 suspicious persons for questioning.
Significant seizures included 1.1 kg of opium, 29 kg of poppy husk, 42 kg of intoxicant powder, 1,070 intoxicant capsules, and illicit liquor.
