Another protesting Punjab farmer committed suicide at the Shambhu border after consuming a poisonous substance, said the farm leaders on Thursday. This is reported to be the second such incident within the time frame of three weeks.

Farmer leader Tejvir Singh said that the 50-year-old Resham Singh was upset with the Central government for not resolving the issues despite their protracted protest.

Resham, who was from Pahuwind in Tarn Taran district, took the extreme step at the Shambhu border point between Punjab and Haryana where farmers have been protesting for almost a year now, pressing the Centre guarantees Minimum Support Price (MSP) for crops.

The suicide note written by the farmer cites, "I, Resham Singh, son of Jagtar Singh from village Pahuwind, am a member of Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee. I believe that sacrificing one’s life is necessary to awaken the Modi government and the Punjab government. Inspired by Dallewal Saab’s sacrifice, I have decided to sacrifice my life."

Resham Singh was taken to the Rajindra hospital in Patiala where he died, the farmers said.

Another farmer, Ranjodh Singh, committed suicide at the Shambhu border on December 18.

Ranjodh Singh was distressed by the deteriorating health of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal (70), who has been on a fast-unto-death since November 26 at the Khanauri border.

Under the banner of Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, farmers have been camping at Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana since February 13 after security forces stopped their march to Delhi.

Last rites won't be performed until government compensate the family: Pandher

Sarwan Singh Pandher, coordinator of the Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Morcha and the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) announced that the post-mortem and last rites of Resham Singh will not be carried out until the government compensates the family with ₹25 lakh, offers a government job to the next of kin, and waives all outstanding loans of the farmer.
