The All India Kisan Mazdoor Morcha has organised effigy-burning protests across Punjab on Monday as part of a nationwide campaign in five states.

Demonstrations are taking place at 74 locations in 22 districts to highlight the acute shortage of urea fertiliser.

The protests began around 9:30 am and are expected to continue until late afternoon.

Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher said the agitation was aimed at drawing attention to the severe shortage of the critical fertiliser.

He alleged that urea was being hoarded and sold at inflated prices through private shops and cooperative societies, putting immense strain on the farming community.

He also accused some dealers of forcing farmers to buy nano urea as a condition to obtain regular fertiliser.

Pandher demanded immediate government intervention to ensure an adequate and timely supply of urea at reasonable rates.

He also criticised the central government over the rising prices of diesel, petrol and cooking gas.

The protests are additionally opposing what farmers call forced land acquisitions in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab and Haryana.

The leader has also demanded the suspension of the proposed India-US trade deal, which is nearing finalisation.

Demonstrations are being held in several districts, including Amritsar, Bathinda, Ferozepur, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Ludhiana, Moga, Patiala, Rupnagar, Sangrur, Nawanshahr, Muktsar Sahib, Pathankot and Tarn Taran.
