The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Punjab government on Monday withdrew the previous Congress government’s consent to the Centre for Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) deployment at the Bhakra and Nangal dams.

The decision was taken during a meeting of the Punjab Cabinet held in Chandigarh this evening. The original consent was granted on October 21, 2021, when Charanjit Singh Channi was the Chief Minister. Explaining the move, Finance Minister Harpal Cheema said the Punjab Police is a valiant and competent force capable of securing the dams on its own. Therefore, the state no longer finds the need for CISF deployment.

In another key development, the Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, approved the introduction of a Bill in the upcoming Special Session of the Vidhan Sabha to permit bullock cart races during the Kila Raipur games, popularly known as the Rural Olympics. These traditional races have remained banned since 2014.

The Council of Ministers also approved the establishment of two new campuses by private universities — CGC Jhanjheri and Rayat Bahra. Additionally, the Cabinet cleared the recruitment process for 3,600 special educators. These teachers will cater to nearly 37,000 students with special needs currently enrolled in government schools across Punjab.
