Punjab govt sends memo to Centre on flood losses

The total estimated loss, according to the memorandum, is ₹13,832 crore; Chief Minister Mann says Centre should show magnanimity and release funds for the state

News Arena Network - Chandigarh - UPDATED: October 11, 2025, 03:09 PM - 2 min read

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said his government has received the report of the special girdawari and will now start disbursing compensation of ₹20,000 per acre to farmers whose crops suffered a damage of over 33 per cent.

The Punjab government has submitted a memorandum to the Central government, listing the total losses suffered by the state in the recent floods.

Officials said the estimates submitted by various departments matched the ones submitted to the inter-ministerial central team during its visit last month. The total estimated loss, according to the memorandum, is Rs 13,832 crore.

The state government had not furnished the details of the flood damages during earlier meetings, including the one with Union Home Minister Amit Shah 10 days ago, where Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had sought more financial assistance for the flood-affected state.

Talking to mediapersons after the filing of nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha election by AAP candidate Rajinder Gupta, Mann said now that they have submitted the memorandum, it is up to the Centre to show magnanimity and release funds for the state. “We have received the report of the special girdawari and will now start disbursing compensation of Rs 20,000 per acre to farmers whose crops suffered a damage of over 33 per cent,” he said.

Responding to the claim of Opposition parties that the floods in Punjab were “manmade”, the chief minister said successive governments in Punjab had not done enough to strengthen river embankments. “It was a natural disaster, similar to the one in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand,” he added.
