Punjab and Haryana judge justice Mahabir Singh SIndhu passed away at the age of 59 at Medanta Hospital on Sunday


Punjab and Haryana High Court Justice Mahabir Singh Sindhu passed away on Sunday at the age of 59. The legal fraternity has mourned the untimely demise of Justice Mahabir Singh Sindhu, a sitting Judge of the High Court.

 

His sudden departure marks a profound loss to the institution he served with unwavering dedication, integrity, and empathy. Justice Sindhu was regarded as a judge of exceptional strength and sensitivity.Justice Sindhu, who had been unwell for several months, died at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram at around 3 am. He was due to retire in April 2029 and was the third senior-most judge of the High Court at the time of his death.

 

"With profound grief and sorrow, it is informed that Hon'ble Mr. Justice Mahabir Singh Sindhu, Judge of this Court, left for his heavenly abode today, i.e., 28 June 2026, at 02.50 a.m.The cremation will take place at His Lordship's native Village Masoodpur, Tehsil and District Hansi, Haryana, today at 5.00 p.m," the High Court said in a message.

Justice Sindhu was regarded as a judge of exceptional strength and sensitivity. Known for his balanced approach, he combined firmness in upholding the rule of law with deep compassion for the human dimensions of justice. His judgments reflected clarity of thought, fairness, and a steadfast commitment to constitutional values.

 

Justice Sindhu was appointed a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in July 2017 after 25 years of legal practice. Born on April 4, 1967, into an agriculturist family in Masudpur village of Hisar district, he studied up to Class X at the Government High School in his native village.He obtained his LLB degree from Panjab University in 1992 and enrolled with the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana the same year.

 

During his legal career, he practiced civil, criminal, constitutional and service law, primarily before the Punjab and Haryana High Court in Chandigarh.He represented several government institutions and served as Additional Central Government Standing Counsel from 1999. In 2000, he was appointed Additional Government Pleader for the Union Territory of Chandigarh.

 

Justice Sindhu later served as Deputy Advocate General, Haryana, from 2004 to 2008, Additional Advocate General, Punjab, from September 2008 to December 2009, and Additional Advocate General, Haryana, from December 2009. He resigned from the Advocate General's office in February 2013 to resume private practice.He was appointed an Additional Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in July 2017 and was made a permanent judge in December 2018.
